From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

Let me just begin by saying that this movie ROCKS MY FACE OFF. I randomly put this movie on my queue last year after seeing the Grindhouse movies. Netflix informed me that this was another Rodriguez/Tarantino collaboration and I could not have been more thrilled.

I've seen that this movie does not get very good ratings, and I have no idea why. It's gritty, gross, and gory, has a great cast, and all the elements of a kick-ass horror movie.

We begin with brothers Seth (Clooney) and Richie Gecko (Tarantino), two convicts headed for the Mexico border. Seth is a bit more level-headed, while Richie is a loose cannon as well as a sexual deviant. The brothers have already robbed a bank and killed several people by the time they take hostages, hold up a liquor store, and burn it to the ground. They head to a shady motel to hole up until nightfall, which is where they run into the Fuller family, also headed for Mexico.

Dad Jacob, son Scott, and daughter Kate are traveling in an RV, and stop at the motel for some rest. Obviously the plan cannot be that easy, and the Geckos and Fullers load up into the RV and speed towards the border. Richie and Seth are expected to meet someone at dawn at a bar called the Titty Twister.

It's at this time where the movie takes a sharp Rodriguez-fueled turn. The bar, out in the middle of nowhere is inhabited by...vampires! Although the horror that ensues is campy and slighty cheesy, it hits the mark. There are some great cameos in the bar including Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, and a smokin-hot Salma Hayek.

This is just a great film all around, especially if you're a fan of Tarantino and/or Rodriguez. Tarantino is convincingly creepy and demented and, fuck Michael Clayton, Clooney is so freakin bad-ass in this flick. If I'm a dork for liking Rodriguez/Tarantino collaborations, then hand me my pocket protectors and sign me up for the Chess Team!

Grade: A+ (Captain Spaulding's Murder Ride - "so fucking badass!")
